A Techie's Guide to Apartment Decor

Working and living in Toronto’s downtown tech hub can be exciting as well as taxing.
Although techies are known as hustlers, your living space should not take a second seat. After all, this is where you recharge at the end of the day for the hustle and bustle ahead.
When it comes to picking a rental space in downtown, I’m sure there are a lot of factors to keep in mind, such as proximity to work and transit, unit size, and amenities. Once you’ve settled in, adding personal flare is next up on the list. How can you efficiently personalize your decor that’s fit for a crazy startup life?

Tip #1: Create order in the foyer

The key is to establish a better organizing system at home. You can save tons of time by making sure that the things you gravitate towards most often, have a place and are within your immediate reach. According to the blog Cort, creating an efficient entrance to the home can help with that. Setting up a free-standing coat rack and a small table to hold coats and keys can make coming and going a lot easier.

Tip #2: De-clutter
Everyone knows about this rule. Especially for a hustler, the last thing you need is coming home to a messy apartment at the end of a long working day. Decluttering may sound more daunting than it actually is. Going through each room, and sorting your things is a good place to start. Items being used can be put in readily available places, where those not, can be stored away. There are tons of stylish bins and baskets on the market right now, that can add some zest to your storage methods.

Tip #3: Go minimalist with decorations

When it comes to adding decor, take a “less is more” approach. Staying with the theme of functionality, and minimalism is the best option. Try investing in statement pieces that in themselves add to the room's essence. The decor should look simple, not sterile.

Tip #4 Cultivate a work quarter at home

One of the best perks of working in a tech company is your ability to work from home! The downside of this may be that you find it more challenging to get your work done (especially with your bed in such a close distance). A designated “office” is a great practice. However, if you live in one of these tiny condos in downtown Toronto, you might need another option. Consider converting the solarium or a corner of your living room into a work area. This will help you stay focused and productive while working from home.

These are the Boiron Group’s tips on home decor that’s fit for a techie. Our goal is to help you make your living space functional, yet pleasing, which has been proven to boost productivity and overall happiness.
